The finished Ivy picture. I have used the shading method that I learned over the summer from Patric Brown. I found that sometime shading and highlighting a picture I could go over a little over board but Patric's method is very good at controlling and analyzing the shading process as it unfolds.

This is the Poison Ivy picture inked and had its base layer of colouring.

I think the colour palette is not to over baring and doesn't confuse the eye. I kept to green  and a select few warm colours for contrast. the Batman mask that is on the mushroom and is the only true blue in the scene, I wanted to keep focus on the mask as it it a key feature of the story.

I was advised to look into my colouring and shading skills and see were I some times go wrong. I needed to make my artwork cleaner so I looked into a artist called Patrick Brown. His illustrations are bold, action pact and are present clean and professional.

I watched his guide to his work process.

Patrick's tutorial

My first quick attemped at using Patrick's method, already the picture holds its own. Like the muscles and the hair; clearly defined.

I had a picture i drew while watching Spartacus. Drawn in blue Biro pen, slightly ink to show form.

Here  is my finished image. This method of colouring is proving to be very helpful at controlling my image. Its the use of the gradient shading that gives that nice mix of hard and soft edges.

Over the summer I choose to start my own Batman project. i am drawing each female villain in a scene that would come about in a what if situation. What would the villain do after they killed Batman?

Firstly Poison Ivy - I feel she would become content and peaceful after the murder of Batman. All she wants is for her and her babies (plant life) to be left alone. if batman where gone there would be know need for her to go on a killing spree.
 sketch

I was influenced by an episode of the Batman the animated series (BAS) called 'house and garden' were Poison Ivy has a family and is good; long story short the kids are half human and half plant and Batman is forced to step in. it is very harsh on Ivy and it shows her sudden change between peaceful and all out tyrant.

Secondly Catwoman -  I placed Celina on top of buildings relaxed slumped and laid back, surrounded by her feline friends. she is holding a carton of milk as if to say cheers!

 sketch

My idea process in this image came from my cats. Cats are laid back chilled and take life as it comes. Even though Celina is close to Batman I feel she would just get on with life, raise a glass and make a toast. Thought the milk fitted her toasting profile more than champagne

Adding another picture that relate to Harley. Joker is one of those happy but scary moods. this potrale of emotion from Harley could be useful in the project.

I decided for the first project i would enter the Harley Quinn competition, this is for a few reasons. Firstly I am a big fan of Batman and secondly i have been drawing the villains for a while now so this would be i good place to start the year. A few sketches i did on the train loosely Photoshopped in the same image.
